We're a month past the Solstice. The sun continues to rise early and give us long, beautiful days. As Hawai'ian elder Auntie Puna Kalama, from Wisdom Weavers of the World says:
Time to uncover your light.
Recognize the world in every experience. Be present.
And Elder Susanne Swibold reminds us:
We are human Beings, not human Doings.
"Being" is a state I've been trying to understand for many years. As an intrepid "do-er" I'm always challenged to stop following my to-do lists and simply sit, witnessing the grief of the world along with the joys and beauties of the world. I get worried that if I don't "do" something, I'll be guilty of the worst
transgressions.
It's hard to avoid blame, and be present with the ways we humans are so flawed, so greedy, so in denial—and the ways we look suffering in the face and practice kindness. Yet it's what all spiritual teachings tell us. If we are full of love, compassion, harmony, they will flow from us, changing our consciousness, informing our
actions, and changing the world.
When we asked spirit to "Show us how to embody the light of love" in my journey group, my helpers basically said "Practice! Practice now, practice later!"
And so we do, by diving into our hearts, by gathering in ceremony, by meditating together. Every day we try to find the jewels of rainbow light in our hearts, shining them into our cells, into our families, into the world.
It's a discipline, a habit of mind/heart that cannot be faked but can be developed, trained, coaxed forth. Supporting each other, we can do this! I mean, BE this love light.
